Trump's Regime of Consequences and Incentives

Trump's voracious desire for retribution has swiftly morphed into a methodical system. During the past year, the president's rage and whims have taken on the form of government actions similar to analogous to earlier repressive regimes. Government officials who do not cooperate are promptly fired and substituted by devotees. Opposing officials who confront him encounter indictment, judicial process and punishment. Opponents have been designated under executive orders as “hostile to national interests”, “against faith communities” and “against free markets”, and threatened with criminal charges as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Transformed

Every situation involving legal action of Trump's enemies and immunity for his allies exhibits its own unique characteristics. Yet, regardless of their individual nature, they exemplify expressions of what has developed as a deliberate method. Those incidents are far from coincidental. His cleansing of DoJ lawyers and FBI personnel, alongside his installation of supporters in senior positions, started swiftly, soon took on a consistency, and has now been molded into a structure. Federal prosecutors and the law enforcement agency have been remade into partisan agencies under his clear direction to carry out his wishes. Injustice has been made normal. It constitutes the retribution system.

Administration is more concerned with targeting the leader's perceived enemies than they are with defending our public welfare.

Internal the Apparatus

The origin of this framework has been exposed in the court filing of several previous high-ranking law enforcement agents filed in September in the judicial system in the capital against agency head a senior appointee and top lawyer Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a effort of revenge against Plaintiffs for what administration figures considered to be a failure to exhibit sufficient allegiance”. According to the filing that one official, the former temporary head, recounts a discussion in which he “freely admitted the impropriety of his conduct”.

The official had sought to shield agency personnel from being fired, the complaint alleges. He informed him that “administration officials” – understood by him to be the executive branch and justice department – had directed him to dismiss anyone who they identified as having been involved in a legal probe against Trump. The filing goes on: “He stated that he had to dismiss the individuals his leaders told him to dismiss, because his ability to hold his own role depended on the dismissal of the officials who handled matters involving the chief executive. Patel noted that there was no option he or the official could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the agency tried to place the chief in jail and he recalls it clearly.’” Once the official informed him he was violating the FBI's own policies, the director allegedly said “he understood that and he realized the character of the summary firings were probably improper”.

Broad Effects

After Patel's reported acknowledgment to the official, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau have been dismantled and reorganized for Trump's retribution system. Six of the FBI's high-ranking agents were terminated or pushed out in the early weeks of the government. About numerous legal professionals at DoJ have agreed to a “deferred resignation program”. No fewer than several government attorneys, including those in the New York office, stepped down in objection over what they considered as political interference in abandoning the legal action against the New York City mayor, Eric Adams, in exchange for his assistance with his federal agency detentions of migrants. The public integrity section of the department, which handles misconduct investigations, has been reduced to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been decimated: seventy percent of its employees has left. 33% of senior leaders at the justice department have resigned. The unit implementing environmental law has lost half its supervisors.

Incentives and Sanctions

Concerning the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the NY office, Danielle Sassoon, resigned in dissent against what she labeled as the “quid pro quo”. Tom Homan, his “immigration leader,” appeared as the enforcer with the mayor on television to declare: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in New York City.”. Meanwhile, another figure, previously the justice department figure and a ex-lawyer, who brokered the deal, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a possible pathway to the judicial branch.

His exemption for offenses committed while in office, awarded by the unprecedented ruling of the Republican majority on the supreme court, thus preventing his criminal case over the Capitol riot and maintaining his political viability for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he depends to defend his supporters. Given this protection, he has been liberated to permit misconduct. The impact of the supreme court decision saturates his presidency and the GOP down to its bones. The court matter has metastasized. Similar to a past leader's legal adviser he remarked about the Watergate
